When it comes to packages and loads that are difficult and heavy, there’s no better way to seal them up than with filament tape. This packing tape is embedded with strands of fiberglass, providing superior tensile strength for your most demanding jobs. However, these fiberglass strands can also make the tape difficult to tear into individual strips.
That’s where a filament tape dispenser comes in. This device features an ergonomic, tensionable grip, as well as a retractable cutter blade that easily slices through the filament tape. In this article, we will cover how to load and operate a filament tape dispenser.
We also made a step-by-step video that you can follow along to:

The majority of tape dispensers are designed to handle a designated width of tape. A roll of tape that’s too wide won’t fit, while one that’s too thin will slide back and forth, resulting in uneven dispensing.
Determine the width you need by checking the dispenser’s packaging and purchase accordingly.
To begin, raise the upper handle and slot the tape onto the semi-circular lower handle. Make sure that when unwound, the adhesive side of the tape faces toward the floor and away from the front of the dispenser.
Set the upper handle back into place.
Grab the end of the tape and feed it through the two rollers near the front of the dispenser. Pull the tape past the cutter blade and sever it by pressing it against plastic safety covering until the blade protrudes and cuts the tape.
When operating the dispenser, your hand acts as the tensioner—strengthening and slackening your grip raises and lowers the tension. Apply a minimal amount of tension on the tape as you seal so that the tape is taut when it clings to the box.
As mentioned, pressing down on the blade’s safety covering protracts the blade, allowing you to cleanly cut the tape.
A filament tape dispenser is a simple, yet sturdy device, allowing users to quickly and efficiently dispense and cut strips of filament tape. And the retractable cutting blade keeps users safe from the serrated edge, adding to its user-friendly appeal. Overall, it’s a handy tool for when you need to seal up heavy cartons or bundle together a difficult load.
